John Newby - Chairman

John is a semi-retired rock lobster fisherman. He is currently Chairman of Directors of the Geraldton Fishermen’s Co-operative, with interests in corporate Governance, research and development and marketing.

John currently sits on the Native Title Steering Committee.

Bronwyn Harries - Vice Chairman

Bronwyn began her involvement in the commercial fishing industry of Western Australia in the late 1970s, working with the MG Kailis Group. Since the mid 1980s her interest has been primarily in the field of aquaculture. Bronwyn is the Managing Director of Cape Seafarms Pty Ltd, a prawn farm facility at Exmouth Gulf.

Her industry commitments have included representation on the Board of the Aquaculture Council of Western Australia since 1990 where she has been Chairman for the past four years. She has also previously represented the industry on the Aquaculture Development Council, the State Government ministerial advisory committee for the aquaculture sector, and is currently Treasurer of the National Aquaculture Council which is developing a major implementation plan under the Federal Government's Aquaculture Action Agenda. She is also a current member on the WAFIC Industry Profile Sub-Committee.

Bronwyn has a passion for this developing sector and the forging of stronger links of cooperation with the other sectors within our State's seafood industry for mutual benefit.

John Cole AM - Director

John Cole served as Chairman of WAFIC for 26 years. As a rock lobster fisherman in Dongara for more than 40 years, John continues to bring a wealth of industry experience and statesmanship as a Director. He was a delegate to ASIC (1989-2003), for years as a member of the National Marine Safety Committee (NMSC) and is a member of the WAFIC Safety and Training Sub Committee.

John has also represented WAFIC at the Federal level, as well as serving on many other Boards and Committees at both State and National level over many years.

Angus Callander - Director

Angus has been a Director of WAFIC since 2000.  He currently holds the position of Chairman of both the Fisheries Research Advisory Board and the Industry Development Unit and is a member of the WAFIC Finance Committee.

His involvement in the fishing industry commenced in 1983 when he joined the MG Kailis Group.  With MG Kailis Group, he held senior executive positions, primarily in the Lobster area of the business.  He has been recently appointed CEO of Vinci Seafood Exporters.

Angus' involvement in industry associated committees extends from 8 years as a member of the Rock Lobster Industry Advisory Committee, to a current member of the Seafood Export Consultative Committee.  He was also a local Government Councillor between 1990 and 1999 and has been involved with TAFE Colleges in both Geraldton and Fremantle.

 

 

Kim Colero– Director

Kim is a second generation Commercial Fisherman from Dongara who now resides in Perth.  He has been an active participant in the Marine and Fishing Indstries all of his life.

Kim began his working career with the MG Kailis Group of companies, has worked on trawlers in the Gulf of Carpentaria, owned and skippered a Lobster vessel for 25 years, worked with Lobster Australia in a managerial capacity, is a past President of the Dongara Fisherman's Association and is a serving member of the Marine Parks and Reserves Authority (MPRA).

Kim brings to the WAFIC Board his experience accross the catching, processing and Government sectors, particularly in Marine Parks and Marine Protected areas.


 

Stephen Hood– Director

Stephen has been involved in the fishing industry sine 1975 in a variety of roles from owner -operator of an A-Zone Rock Lobster concession, through lecturing in Marine Studies at TAFE to his current role as Compliance and Projects Manager with MG Kailis Group, a position he has held for 11 years.

He holds tertiary qualifications in the fields of Marine Biology, Aquaculture and Education.

Stephen's involvement in industry committees is diverse.  He is Board Member of the Australian Council of Prawn Fisheries, Director of the Aquaculture Council of WA and is a member of the Joint Trawl MAC and the WA FRAB.  Stephen is also a long-standing member of the FRDC Rock Lobster Post Harvest Sub Program and has advisory involvement with several teaching institutions.

Kerry Rowe - Director

Kerry was a WAFIC Director between 1998 and 2002 and rejoined the board in 2006. 

He has been a professional fisherman and license holder since 1984 and has been a shareholder and director in an abalone factory since 1987.

Kerry has been involved in the politics of fishing since the early 1990's and is currently chairman of WA Abalone Industry Association, President of the Esperance Abalone Divers Association, Industry representative on the Abalone MAC and WA representative and director of the Abalone Council of Australia

 

 

Dexter Davies– Director

Dexter has a Bachelor of Business degree and is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors .

He was a project management accountant with Wesfarmers Europe Ltd, a wheat and sheep farmer (family farm) in Wyalkatchem for 20 years until 1998, a Councilor of the Western Australian Council of State School Organizations, a member of the Western Australian Parliament in the Legislative Council representing the Agricultural Region and a member of the National Drought Review Panel.

He is currently Chairman of the Ministerial Dry Season Advisory Committee WA, a Director of the Rural Business Development Corporation WA, Chairman of the Western Rock Lobster Council, Chairman of the Aquaculture Development Council WA, a member of the National Agricultural Monitoring Scheme (NAMS) advisory reference group, a Councilor of the Royal Agricultural Society of WA, a member of the board of the Western Australian Cricket Association and President of the Claremont Nedlands Cricket Club (WACA competition).

He was a State Schoolboys athletic champion, played league football for East Fremantle (WAFL) and was a 1st grade premiership player for the Claremont Cottesloe Cricket Club (WACA).

 

 

 

 

Doug Gibson– Director

At 42 years of age, Douglas has been a fisherman for 21 years with experience both in the Scandinavian and Northern Australian fishing industries.

Since 1995, he has been the owner and vessel operator in the Pilbara Fish Trap Fishery supplying tropical snappers to Perth.

Douglas has 14 years of experience in remote area fishing and the issues that affect operators in Northern waters. He has a keen interest in business, ethics and leadership and the pressing need for the industry to be adaptive to match todays business and regulatory environment.
