To administer and manage native title matters on behalf of the industry in line with the Western Australian Fishing Industry Council (WAFIC) policy and procedures. The Native Title Officer, in conjunction with the Executive Officer, is responsible for negotiating native title outcomes throughout Western Australia on behalf of the fishing industry, in line with WAFIC policy.
Notification/ Reporting
Ensure all fishing, pearling and aquaculture interests are notified of claims that may affect their interests including Federal Court processes, WAFICs involvement in the matter and their options for participation
Provide reports to interest holders on claims proceeding to trial, and/ or the progress of substantive mediation and any outcomes in relation to the above
Attend industry meetings to provide briefings on relevant native title & indigenous fishing matters and provide reports and updates for appropriate industry publications
Oversee and provide content for the WAFIC Native Title website
Research
Conduct research with respect to commercial fisheries, pearling and aquaculture leases within areas subject to native title claim, including the compilation of maps
Review any information (historical/ anthropological and other) with respect to assertions to marine resources either though the litigation/ and or mediation process and conduct any further research as necessary
Conduct any research required in order to assist in the development of WAFIC strategy and policy
Other claims research as necessary
Claim Monitoring
Monitor all native title claims in Western Australia seaward of the high water mark.
Monitor all native title claims seaward of the high water mark Australia wide.
Respond to all native title queries from WAFIC members and stakeholders
Mediation
Attend mediation conferences and other relevant negotiations on behalf of WAFIC, and where authorised participate on behalf of WAFIC
In conjunction with the research considerations specified above, provide and compile any relevant research and/or information in relation to mediation proceedings, and where necessary provide reports and briefs to the native title committee, WAFIC members and any other appropriate personnel.
Legal
Monitor Federal Court claim proceedings
Provide instructions to WAFICs legal representatives
Produce other work, including research and mapping for WAFICs legal representatives where necessary
Financial
Manage the financial and physical assets of the WAFIC Native Title Unit
