Seafood is a limited, but renewable resource.
Fundamental to the future and profitability of the commercial fishing industry is the sustainability of fish stocks and the environment they exist in.
Good management is based on scientific assessment of stocks and implemented by State and Commonwealth government regulation with the support of commercial fishers.
All Western Australian fisheries that wish to export must demonstrate to the Commonwealth Government via ecological sustainability reports to Environment Australia that the fishery is managed for ecological sustainability.
In addition to working with government to meet their demanding environmental standards WAFIC is also committed to gaining independent, third party, internationally recognised environmental certification for WA commercial fisheries and assisting fisheries to meet the rigorous requirements to maintain certification.
The Western Rock Lobster fishery was the first fishery in the world to gain Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification as a sustainable and well managed fishery. The Australian Mackerel Icefish Fishery is currently undergoing assessment for evaluation with the Marine Stewardship Council’s MSC) standard for sustainable well managed fisheries. It is hoped that other Western Australian fisheries will gain certification in the future.
Every two years a certified fishery must undergo an assessment to ensure that standards are maintained and recommendations to enhance the sustainability of the fishery are being adequately pursed.
Marine Stewardship Council
The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is an independent, global, nonprofit organisation with its head office based in London, UK. The MSC is seeking to harness consumer purchasing power to change and promote environmentally responsible stewardship of the world’s most important renewable resource.
The MSC has developed an environmental standard for sustainable and well-managed fisheries. It uses a product label to reward environmentally responsible fisheries management and practices.
Though operating independently since 1999, the MSC was first established by Unilever, the world’s largest buyer of seafood and the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF), the international conservation organisation.
