The Australian Seafood Standard, recently endorsed by the Seafood Services Australia Network, reaffirms the Australian Seafood Industry's commitment to delivering safe, sustainable seafood that meets and exceeds the expectations of seafood consumers in Australia and around the world.
Consumer confidence that seafood is ‘safe’, ‘clean’ and ‘green’, is vital to the well-being of seafood industry and the tens of thousands of jobs it supports in regional coastal communities around Australia.
The Australian Seafood Standard reflects the seafood industry’s commitment to providing seafood that is produced in accordance with internationally recognised standards, and which meets and where possible exceeds the requirements of domestic and international customers and food safety authorities.
The Australian Seafood Standard will further enhance consumer confidence in seafood produced or traded commercially in Australia, while providing the flexibility for seafood businesses to implement cost efficient, relevant and innovative management systems to meet the required seafood safety and suitability outcomes.
The Standard will also be a key industry input into the development of a National Primary Product and Process Standard for seafood, and will help simplify audit and certification arrangements.
The Standard applies to seafood that is produced or traded commercially in Australia, including seafood exports and imports.
