INdian Ocean Fresh Australia (IOFA) was last night recognised when it won the People Development Award, sponsored by INPEX, at the 2019 Western Australian Seafood Industry Awards.

The Awards event, recognising excellence in the WA seafood industry, was held at The Esplanade Hotel in Fremantle and opened by Minister for Fisheries, the Hon. Dave Kelly MLA, in front of an audience of industry participants and representatives of various stakeholder groups.

IOFA Managing Director, Erica Starling said that IOFA recognises that the future of the seafood industry lies in the development of skills and attracting quality candidates to regional areas for personal development.

“One of the challenges we face is acquiring and retaining skilled staff in a regional area.”

“That is why, at IOFA, we are dedicated to exposing staff and students to the breadth and diversity of a career in the seafood industry. Our policy is that people will leave the company better than they started – with more knowledge, skills and qualifications.”

WA Fishing Industry Council (WAFIC) Chair, Dr Ron Edwards said IOFA had demonstrated excellence in developing and undertaking a people development activity that has contributed substantially towards a higher performing workforce for the seafood industry.

“Developing an emerging and rapidly growing commercial aquaculture venture in regional WA would have been challenging for IOFA. However, they have recognised opportunities to identify potential trainees and provide development prospects for existing employees with higher qualifications or skills, whilst also employing innovative ways to develop industry leaders for the future”, said Dr Edwards.

“As an industry body, we recognise the importance of acknowledging those individuals and organisations who make a substantial contribution to benefiting our industry, and Indian Ocean Fresh Australia are certainly incredibly worthy of this Award,” Dr Edwards concluded.
