This session brings together experts from Canada, Germany and New Zealand to share their perspectives on emerging technologies and innovations in commercial fisheries.
Some innovations have an obvious connection to Australian fisheries, others are valuable because they challenge our thinking, expose us to new approaches, and broaden our understanding of what may be possible in the future.
The sessions will explore innovations being developed and trialled internationally; new ideas and technologies that may influence the future of fishing.
You’ll also hear from leading researchers and industry innovators with the opportunity to participate in discussion and share your own experiences and perspectives.
The speakers are:
● Paul Winger (Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada). Global Trends in Bottom Trawl Fisheries Innovation. Paul will provide an international perspective on emerging developments in bottom trawl fisheries, including gear technology, fishing efficiency, selectivity, bycatch reduction and environmental performance.
● Daniel Stepputtis (Thünen Institute of Baltic Sea Fisheries, Germany). Electrofishing in Shrimp Trawls. Daniel will discuss the use of electrical stimulation technology in shrimp trawl fisheries and the opportunities and challenges associated with its application.
● Martin de Beer and Gerard (“Jed”) Janssen (Precision Seafood Harvesting Ltd, New Zealand). FloMo Technology and its Potential Application to Australian Fish and Prawn Trawl Fisheries. Martin and Jed will present on the development and application of FloMo technology, including its potential to improve fish trawl performance, catch quality, selectivity and discard survival. They will also discuss opportunities for applying the technology within Australian fish and prawn trawl fisheries.
