Regional Engagement
Departmental collaboration
WAFIC staff engage regularly with government agencies, particularly DPIRD, through both strategic and operational meetings. These meetings include strategic discussions at senior executive level through to more regular meetings to progress operational issues and fisheries management. These interactions are essential for progressing fisheries management issues and ensuring that decisions are grounded in practical realities.
Regional engagement
Recognising the importance of regional fisheries, WAFIC prioritises on-the-ground engagement to better understand local impacts and advocate for regionally appropriate outcomes. During the South Coast Marine Park consultation, WAFIC’s presence in affected communities helped inform and empower local fishers and ensured their representation was heard at the highest levels. With the park now defined, WAFIC is actively working with regional stakeholders to develop a model for fair and timely compensation.
Environmental advocacy
WAFIC meets quarterly with the EPA Chair to discuss project proposals and their implications for fisheries. Through active participation in environmental approval processes, WAFIC seeks to negotiate outcomes that minimise risk and impact to commercial fisheries. A dedicated WAFIC staff member ensures this work remains focused and effective.
