OUR Fisheries
Western Australia boasts over 40 managed fisheries along its expansive 10,000-kilometre coastline. To ensure these fisheries are sustainably and effectively managed, the industry is strategically organised into Councils and Associations that foster collaboration, representation and leadership among their commercial fishing members.
At the forefront of this structure is the Fisheries Council of Western Australia, under which the Western Australian Fishing Industry Council (WAFIC) is recognised as the peak representative body for commercial fishing across the state.
WAFIC plays a pivotal leadership role in advocating for the industry, guiding policy and promoting sustainable fishing practices.

The commercial fishing sector in WA is comprised of two distinct operational models:

WILD CATCH FISHERIES
These traditional operations involve harvesting seafood directly from the ocean using methods such as nets, pots, traps, and lines.

AQUACULTURE FISHERIES
These are more controlled environments where seafood is cultivated and harvested from sea pens, tanks, or inland ponds.
While WAFIC provides overarching industry representation, many fisheries are represented by specialised industry organisations that focus on the unique needs of their members. These include:
- Western Rock Lobster Council
- Aquaculture Council of WA
- Pearl Producers Association
- Abalone Industry Association
- Marine Aquarium Fisheries
- Shark Bay Fisheries
- Southern Seafood Producers (WA)
Complementing these bodies are approximately 20 Professional Fishermen’s Associations located throughout the state, each contributing to local leadership and community engagement. These include:
- Dongara Professional Fishermen’s Association
- Esperance Professional Abalone Divers Association
- Esperance Professional Fishermen’s Association
- Geraldton Professional Fishermen’s Association
- Kalbarri Professional Fishermen’s Association
- Kimberley Professional Fishermen’s Association
- Leeman Professional Fishermen’s Association
- Mandurah Licensed Fishermen’s Association
Together, these organisations form a robust and purpose-driven network that champions the long-term viability, stewardship, sustainability and prosperity of Western Australia’s commercial fishing industry.
