New moorings added for Abrolhos Islands
Five new boat moorings have now been laid at the Houtman Abrolhos Islands to support growing tourism and economic opportunities.
The new moorings are located across five high-usage areas and will cater for tourism, recreational and commercial sectors, improving visitor access and safety for vessels.
Public moorings have been installed at Gun Island, North Island, Pelsaert Island and Middle Island, with a new commercial mooring at White Bank.
The new installations will be complemented by a new mooring booking system, which is currently in development.
While the new system is under development, boat skippers are reminded to complete the online notification form with the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development before they visit.
The new moorings are part of a $8.1 million investment in infrastructure upgrades at the Abrolhos.
Planning is underway for a new public jetty and visitor area on Rat Island.
Designs are currently being finalised for both projects with the tenders for the construction expected to be released in coming months.
