The Fisheries Research and Development Corporation (FRDC) has provided an update on FRDC-funded projects of interest to the commercial fishing sector that are currently underway in WA, as well as some recently completed projects.
- 2024-072 Exploring new live Blue Swimmer Crab export markets: an integrated whole of chain approach This project is looking to develop live supply chains and export opportunities by improving handling, transport and market access. With the business case and market review now completed, the next stage is to conduct pilot trials for live markets.
- 2024-009 Exploring new resources for the West Coast Deep Sea Crustacean Managed Fishery in WA. This project is about investigating new species to diversify the catch. A range of different pot types have been trialled, along with pot lights, with some interesting new crab and scampi species being found. The next stage is to expand surveys to the Rowley Shoals and to replicate the west coast surveys on the south coast.
- 2023-052 Novel fishery independent, biological and economic-processing methods to underpin expansion of Australia’s fastest growing fishery, the Western Rock Octopus This important project to support the next stage of growth for this fishery is now commencing, with plans underway for surveys.
- 2022-157 Bringing the iconic Australian Herring (Arripus georgianus) to the food service and retail market (Phase 2) With the new crumbed herring product now available in the food service sector, the next stage is to expand the product range to include flash fried crumbed, battered and crumbed product for frying.
