Fishers call for Sea Organ memorial to commemorate lives lost at sea
A group of fishing industry volunteers has put out a call to build a monument to highlight the bravery of, and sacrifices made by, WA’s commercial fishing fleet, and to commemorate those lives lost at sea.
After originally pursuing a concept for a more traditional statue, the WA Fishers Lost at Sea Memorial Association (FlatSea) has now announced an innovative concept to achieve an interactive memorial that will resonate with people and the ocean.
The concept will reflect a Sea Organ memorial that is located in the Croatian city of Zadar. The Sea Organ is a large layered structure that uses the movement of the ocean to create musical notes and rhythms, allowing people to sit by the sea to soothing sounds and a gentle melody that is reminiscent of voices carried over water.
The hauntingly beautiful sounds are created by the Sea Organ, which is constructed by the water’s edge with the sounds are generated when the gentle swell pushes air through a series of pipes. It is one of the world’s biggest musical instruments and is a triumph of art and engineering.
FlatSea organisers believe a ‘sea organ’ would be a perfect tribute to the hundreds of souls who have been lost at sea while pulling pots, lines and nets along the WA coast – a giant, naturally powered musical instrument filling the beachside air with notes from the ocean.
