Interim CEO Message – Pushing forward against the current

Our industry is currently navigating a period of significant uncertainty, particularly with the rollout of the Voluntary Fisheries Adjustment Scheme (VFAS) and the Compulsory Fisheries Adjustment Scheme (CFAS).

Many operators are now working through complex information within tight timeframes, and there remain important questions that need clear and timely answers.

WAFIC is actively engaging with Government to seek that clarity and ensure industry concerns are properly understood. We are continuing to push for practical information, fair treatment, and a process that reflects the real impacts being felt across fishing businesses.

I have also written to the Transport Minister to formally request a waiver of harbour pen fees for commercial fishing operators directly impacted by recent fisheries management decisions and will keep you advised when I receive a response.

At the same time, preparations for the WA Seafood Industry Awards are progressing. I am aware there are mixed views about proceeding with the event this year, and those perspectives are both valid and understood given the current circumstances. However, I do not believe that government decisions, no matter how difficult, should define our industry or take away from our value.

This event is not about policy or process – it is about people. It is about recognising the individuals and businesses who continue to contribute with resilience, professionalism and pride, often in the face of significant challenge. This event is about celebrating our fishers and the contribution you are making to this industry and the State.

If you are able to, I encourage you to join us and celebrate our industry. Taking the time to celebrate these contributions does not diminish the issues we are dealing with, it reinforces the strength and character of our industry.

In my first three weeks as Interim CEO, I have taken a direct and hands-on approach, listening, engaging and working through immediate priorities at pace. There is a significant amount of work ahead, and WAFIC remains committed to standing alongside industry and advocating strongly on your behalf.

Thank you for your continued resilience and engagement.

Manue Daniels
