Minister to provide Act-of-Grace payments to impacted fishers
WAFIC met with the Fisheries Minister yesterday seeking immediate relief for fishers impacted by last week’s fisheries closures and reductions.
Following the meeting, the Minister has agreed to provide ‘Act of Grace’ payments to impacted licence holders.
Unfortunately, at this stage, this is a prepayment to be deducted against any final buy back payment. WAFIC contends this should be an emergency relief payment to support fishers in the face of the sudden closure.
The details are still being worked out, including eligibility criteria, with the project treated as a priority.
The Minister is hopeful to have a decision on this by the end of the week with payments to commence in January 2026.
WAFIC will keep industry members informed as this progresses.
Once a decision has been made, fishers can expect to receive a letter with all the necessary information.
