WAFIC Chief Executive Officer, John Harrison, says that he anticipates the pre-Christmas prawn season to be no different to any other year – contrary to what you might have read in the media.

“WA Shark Bay Prawn operators have advised that there will be no shortage of prawns this year and with approximately 1600T of Tiger and King Prawns caught this season (March – end of October), the catch is better than the 2016 season.”

“Although producers are anticipating a slight increase in prawn prices pre-Christmas – it will be no different to any other festive season.”

“Prawn lovers throughout WA need not worry as there will be plenty of those family-favourite, sustainable, WA prawns to go around the Christmas family lunch this year,” he said.

Mr Harrison recommends that consumers shop around this festive season to get the best price and purchase early, to beat the Christmas rush.

“Do your research and speak directly to your seafood retailer who will be able to recommend the best priced prawns on the day and where they come from.”

“All prawns are snap frozen onboard to retain their premium quality, so it makes sense to purchase frozen prawns pre-Christmas before those chaotic seafood queues begin,” he concluded.
