New safety management systems come into effect from 1 August 2023
AMSA recently undertook a review of Marine Order 504 alongside industry to better align with the recently revised Marine Order 505 (Certificates of competency) and to clarify and strengthen key concepts relating to operational safety onboard vessels.
AMSA is now reaching out to industry to help them understand and meet these new requirements before they come into force on 1 August 2023.
Marine Order 504 (Certificates of operation and operation requirements – national law) outlines safety management system requirements (SMS), including risk assessment and crewing levels, for domestic commercial vessels (DCVs).
To help inform fishers, a range of PDFs have been developed to explain the changes and compliance, including:
- Infographic explanations of the changes to Marine Order 504;
- Checklists to help owners review their SMS, risk assessment and procedures
- An example ‘risk assessment’ to give some guidance on what is required.
