WAFIC shares open letter to the Premier on demersal fisheries decisions

As questions begin to circle over why science has taken a back seat in the government’s recent demersal fisheries decisions, WAFIC has taken the opportunity to write an open letter to the Premier to ensure he is aware of the issues and impacts of these changes.

The letter highlights fundamental issues such as food security and the impacts that will be felt across downstream industries such as tourism, hospitality and even a humble serve of local fish and chips.

WAFIC is calling for a meeting with the Premier and an opportunity for a reset to develop more targeted and nuanced solutions, as opposed to the current sledgehammer approach.

There are a number of ways available to implement changes that will deliver long-term sustainability and co-existence for all fisheries stakeholders, but we need to meet to explore these options.

The issue was picked up on ABC’s Morning program, which showed overwhelming support for commercial fishing.
You can listen to the program here.

We’ll keep you updated as the issue develops.
