New cyclone warnings system
With growing uncertainty and unpredictability of damage created by tropical cyclones, vessel operators in cyclone sensitive regions are being urged to apply extreme caution with regard to exposing workers to the dangers associated with cyclone risks, particularly along the northwest coast.
A cyclone contingency plan should form an integral part of a vessel’s safety management system.
Operators of a fishing business should ensure their workers understand the procedures to follow if a cyclone threatens, while emergency plans should include advice from the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) and relevant regional emergency planning groups for each site locations.
Other changes include new warning designation, which no longer use the old yellow, blue and red alert system.
