Exploring innovations in seafood
Last month WAFIC worked with the Food Industry Development team at the Department of Primary Industries and regional development (DPIRD) and the Sustainable Innovation Food Technology (SIFT) Centre team to host a Seafood Innovation workshop that explored some of the barriers faced by the commercial seafood industry, alongside opportunities to retort, reshape and move forward.
The event was attended by approximately 40 seafood stakeholders, as well as leading Perth chefs.
Many seafood industry members are recognising opportunities to value-add, innovate, and explore new ways to increase their yield through downstream processing or utilising new technologies to reduce costs.
Enhancing the sustainability and affordability of local underutilised seafood species is also major driver of innovation.
Better use of available technology was a popular topic for businesses as the workshop showcased a number of new technologies on offer through SIFT, that can be adapted to make big changes for businesses working on small budgets.
Additional workshops and events are set for 2026, including a market development workshop for the food and beverage sector. YOU CAN FIND OUT MORE HERE.
