WAFIC frustrated over latest seismic approvals
Despite significant efforts by WAFIC and other stakeholders, NOPSEMA has approved the Pilot Energy Eureka 3D Marine Seismic Survey off the MidWest coast.
This outcome is extremely disappointing. Throughout the consultation process, WAFIC made multiple submissions to both Pilot Energy and NOPSEMA highlighting the significant risks this activity poses to our fisheries, the marine environment and the livelihoods of fishers. We also made a formal request for Pilot Energy to undertake further research on seismic impacts on Western Rock Octopus. This request was dismissed.
NOPSEMA has now approved the Environment Plan, with the survey to proceed from 1 February 2026 to 31 March 2026.
WAFIC strongly encourages fishers who will be operating in and around the area during this period to contact Pilot Energy directly on [email protected] to make sure your operations are known and to initiate compensation discussions.
You can find Pilot Energy’s Commercial Fisher Compensation Protocol at this link.
If you have any questions or require assistance in engaging with Pilot to discuss compensation, please don’t hesitate to contact the WAFIC.
